FISHY TIPS: No one really knows where the highly migratory
wahoo comes from or where they go to when they leave. They are found in all temperate seas and seem to prefer sharp
drop off areas when near a coastline, whether it be South Florida or South Bimini. No one knows exactly when they'll
arrive at any geographic spot. Wahoo are suddenly there as if arriving on a conveyor belt.
.
Wahoo are the Cheeta's of the Sea
attaining drag burning speeds and will strike a variety of fast straight running baits. They are not leader shy and
strike cable or wire. They will strike on or below the surface but seem to have a preference for weighted baits that run deeper
in the water. Use lead head feathers, trolling sinkers, downriggers and planes to get baits down. Wahoo are slashers.
They run up fast and attempt to slice they bait in half then pick up the pieces at their leisure. Wahoo are found
off shore under pallets & bamboo as well as up close to the reef in 180 - 300'.
.
Troll faster for wahoo than for dolphin. You cannot out run
a 'hoo. Speeds of 11 - 19kts with drags set are used by wahoo tournament boats. Or, use the stop & go technique.
Very effective! Pull up to a weedline that looks productive or with schoolies about. Stop the boat in place for
five minutes and let baits sink down to vertical. Then throw the boat in gear and resume a fast troll. Wahoo
laying below will get curious and come over to see what that "is", often striking as you power away.
Kite fishing while slow trolling a goggle-eye or blue runner with hook in the nose and stinger at the tail is also very effective.
Two hundred to 250' of water is a good depth. Most important thing to do is to go fish!
